Action 52 Review

OPERATION MOON. If you squint, it kind of looks and plays like Jackal, except without the fun. You're driving along on a grey or green background, shooting guns. In a twist, if you run over the bits of the gun that you just destroyed, you die. Plus, you can't see your bullets, adding to the challenge.

DAM BUSTERS. I never really ran across any dams to bust, but then again, what motivation would a bear have for busting a dam? You're some sort of bear thing, that runs around while other green and white bears try to eat you. It does have more than one 'screen', though, making it a step up above many others in this collection. Also, your bear is somewhat heart-warming, though the rest of the game is hardly 'bearable'. Ugh..... Action-52 Rating: 33

THRUSTERS. It was with a gleam in my eye that I clicked on this one - I was expecting a return to the glory days of 8-bit porno, but instead found myself playing another dull, uninspired shooter. At least your ship looks okay in this one...

HAUNTED HILL. Or is it HAUNTED HALLS? THe load screen seems not to be sure. Regardless, you'll quickly discover what Haunted Hill/Halls has to offer - an incredibly busty redhead and a bunch of flying spooky faces at which to shoot ASCII arrows. However, this game receives TOP HONORS because it actually features at least one boss.. and multiple levels! It's one of the few games where I actually experienced a strange emotion while playing - mild enjoyment.

CHILL OUT. We have another one-screener here. You're a monkey with a saggy diaper, trying to throw snowballs at other saggy-diapered monkeys. Also, a 2-foot drop from ladders or ledges is deadly, so exercise caution.

SHARKS. I've always been somewhat of a sucker for underwater games - sqoon, seaquest, jaws - this is your very basic move around and shoot sharks kind of game. You'll also face white sharks and jellyfish, which move about as if they are on crack. They disappear sometimes, also, adding to the challenge.

MEGALONIA.One of the better looking titles in this awesome collection, MEGALONIA has reasonably detailed backgrounds and a fair assortment of enemies. If only there were any variation in the game; powerups, anything. As it is, you'll probably blast your little heart out for 45 seconds, and then never look back.

FRENCH BAKER. You have to give the designers points for creative names. There's a definite food thing going on.. Alfredo, French Baker.. unfortunately, French Baker doesn't even have a scrolling screen - you just walk around, throwing paper clips at rolling food carts and angry bread. It's not as fun as it sounds.

ATMOS QUAKE. This one gets a few extra votes because of the fact that the ship looks sort of like the one in The Guardian Legend. It's probably the best shooter in this package. You fly around, shooting powerboats and enraged Koosh balls.
